The title just about sums it up. I’ve been afraid to say anything before it’s finished. I guess I worry that people will dismiss me out of hand. It’s silly, really. But I’d rather say, “Hey, guess what? I wrote a book!” Anyone can say they’re writing a book. It sounds conceited and cool. But how many people can say they’ve written a book?
It’s my first foray into long form prose, so naturally I’m nervous. I’ve written plenty of poems and songs, and even some short fiction. But this is something new. It’s been a huge part of my life for a while now (over two years, squeezed between a wife, a 40-hour work week, and all my other musical projects). I felt disingenuous not sharing with my friends. At the very least, now I’ll be able to boast (or bitch) online when I’ve had a particularly tremendous (or trying) day of writing. I mean, that’s the world in which we live, right? Feed the narcissist!
As of today, I’ve written about 65,000 words. That sounds like a lot. It’s not. To put things in perspective, my best estimates (bestimates) place the finished book between 450,000 and 475,000 words (slightly shorter than The Lord Of The Rings, although certainly nowhere near that caliber). Hell, my outline alone was 50,000 words, not including ancillary notes and reference materials.
Suffice it to say, I have my work cut out for me.
What is the book about, you ask? Well, if you’ve read this far without giving up, I suppose you have a right to know. I don’t want to give away too much, but here’s a taste:
- It’s an historical fantasy that takes place in a period resembling the Dark Ages, in a land resembling the British Isles. Vague enough?
- In addition to humans, there are a few races of anthropomorphic animals. Okay, more than a few. Alright, eight.
- The main story is broken into three arcs. I’m hesitant to call them separate books, but that’s what they’re shaping up to be. God help me, I’m writing a trilogy.
So there it is. A few of you already knew this. To the rest of you, especially my dear, fantasy-loving friends, I’m sorry I kept you in the dark so long. Right now, I’m writing this for me, and me alone. My only goals are to have fun, stretch my literary muscles, and revel in the language. I’d love to be published some day, but those of you who already are know it’s no easy road. I may submit some of my short fiction for publication, just to start piling up rejection slips…we’ll see.
Eventually (perhaps as soon as December) I’ll be looking for beta readers to provide feedback on the first story arc. It will need major revision before then. Sometimes I read a completed chapter and I’m astounded that such elegant prose poured from my pen. Other times, I find myself wading through shit so deep I can hardly believe the stench didn’t knock me out as I was writing it. Such is the craft I suppose.
Well, that was a load off my chest. Thanks for reading.
