Happy Octoberween, y'all!
Now that I've launched the new site, I'm planning on posting monthly updates about my various projects (more of an accountability thing for myself than any outside interest that I'm aware of).
But first, in honor of the holiday, I wanted to post a link to one of my favorite tales of the macabre: Edgar Allan Poe's THE MASQUE OF THE RED DEATH.
I first read this story when I was very young, and it scared the shit out of me. These days, I'm made of sterner stuff.* But seriously, this one's creepy. I don't say that to dissuade you from reading it. Just, you know...change your pants afterward.
Now, on to October's recap:
- I finished the shitty first draft of A SMUDGED AND CROOKED LINE (a short story I’ve been working on for a while).
- I tightened up my flash fiction story THE TROJAN CHILD.
- I researched and outlined THE DISTANT LIGHT OF DAWN (a flintlock fantasy novella which I'll be writing for NaNoWriMo).
(I wrote at length about my feelings on NaNoWriMo last year. This year, I debated whether or not I'd participate again. I finally decided that, at the very least, it's a good excuse to bang out the initial rough draft of a story that's been rattling around in my head for a while.)
And that's it for this month (aside from a bizarre event at a drive thru Dunkin' Donuts where I accidentally opened a portal to the Otherworld—but you don't want me to bore you with that).
Now, if you'll excuse me, I need to go cut a stout blackthorn to banish these ghosts and goblins beating down my door.
*I'm lying. It still scares the shit out of me.
